Marine litter, Policies and legislation

International | EU policies and legislation

The problem of marine litter has received growing international attention since the first International Marine Debris Conference in 1984. It was recognised as a priority area by the United Nations in the Global Programme of Action of the protection of the marine environment from landbased activities by the UNEP’s Governing Council in 2004 and more recently in the Rio+20 Conference. At the European level, a number of policies have adressed the issue of marine litter, focusing on both the sources and impacts of marine litter.
